A consolidated approach to Foreign Affiliate Reporting

Taxpayers who must file a foreign affiliate information reporting form T1134; have faced a certain amount of uncertainty since the Canada Revenue Agency ("CRA") released a new version of the form on January 10, 2013.


Increased volume of processing reviews by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA):

Over the past few years the Canada Revenue Agency has increased the number of processing reviews for business expenses claimed by self-employed individuals. In particular, they have been requesting additional backup information for the following expenses:

  1. Business Use of Home Office;
  2. Other business expenses such as gifts to clients and customers (particularly in the real estate sector);
  3. Business Use of Vehicle.

If adequate backup information is not provided they are denying the deduction(s) which will result in taxes payable plus interest on the balance dating back to when the original tax return payment was due.
